Which major athletes are now eating beet greens?
After years of being a hot topic in the media, it’s no surprise that athletes are starting to embrace beet greens.
The news came from a new study published in the Journal of Sports Medicine, and it suggests that the trend of athletes adopting beet greens may have something to do with improved digestion, which in turn could help them lose weight faster.
“We think it’s because beet greens contain fiber and fiber is known to improve digestion,” said Dr. Jessica D’Onofrio, a sports medicine and nutrition specialist at the Cleveland Clinic, in a press release.
“There are some studies showing that athletes who eat a diet rich in fiber and vegetables have better performance outcomes and fewer weight gain-related diseases.
We’re also seeing an increase in the use of beet greens in athletes.”
This new study found that beet greens have an impact on overall health and performance.
It was conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan and Northwestern University, who found that athletes consuming a diet of 100 grams of beet green per day had a reduced risk of heart disease and stroke.
They also found that consuming a beet green diet reduced the risk of a variety of conditions, including obesity, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
D’Onoffrio noted that these benefits of beet-based foods could also extend to the weight loss department.
“It’s important for athletes to have a well-balanced diet that contains a variety, and that’s why I think athletes should look for foods that have the fiber, fiber content, and vegetables that help them feel full,” she said.
“The research has shown that consuming these foods with fiber helps athletes to lose weight,” D’Inofrio added.
“So it’s not just beet greens that can help, but also other types of fruits and vegetables.”
