Paul Greene: ‘I’m not afraid to get it right’
By DAVID SCHLASSEN The Associated PressThe Washington Capitals are looking to make a splash in free agency this summer with the acquisition of forward Paul Greenes from the Edmonton Oilers, the NHL announced.
Greenes, 26, scored 16 goals and added 11 assists in 69 games last season with Edmonton.
He had nine goals and 22 points in 40 games in his final season with the Oilers in 2017-18.
The Capitals, who are also expected to offer Greenes a two-year contract, will pay $4.5 million for the two-way winger.
The team has already indicated they will not match any offers for Greenes.
His agent, Kevin Pollack, said Tuesday the Capitals are not interested in signing him.
Pollack also said the team has been “very clear” that Greenes will not be a top-four winger.
He said Greenes has “proven to be a valuable contributor to the team” and that he will be an “exciting addition to our club.”
Greenes’ goal total of 15 last season in 65 games in the NHL is a career high and his average of 14:21 of ice time per game ranks fourth among NHL forwards.
The 6-foot-4, 228-pounder has not yet signed a contract with a team.
